Duane J. Pieper
Bronze Sculpture & Encaustic
Duane grew up in rural Nebraska defined by rolling hills, lazy flowing creeks, quilted fields, grazing animals, spacious skies, and dynamic sunsets. This context with its distinct seasons, hues, textures, and agrarian cycles has shaped his visual sensitivities.
Artistic inclinations in my life found early expression in my father’s woodshop. Ultimately this led to acquiring a degree in fine-woodworking. My passion for creating has led me to other mediums including the ancient ‘encaustic’ and cold wax painting techniques. Sculpting in bronze has allowed me to express myself three-dimensionally.
The ‘International Encaustic Artists’ association has given me access to other artists with a passion for wax. CIVA, Christians in Visual Arts, is another venue of like-minded artists. The Association of Nebraska Art Clubs has provided contacts with regional artists. Membership in local art associations and galleries gives me ongoing opportunities to display in the Omaha metro area.
Creativity, biblical studies, and archeology are a significant part of my being. These pursuits have given me insight into the dynamic layers of history, cultures, and Scriptures. Digging into the soils and landscape of the biblical narrative is the foundation of many of my artistic expressions.
Encaustic and archeology have a great deal in common, in which one layer or strata, whether it be dirt or wax, builds upon another and the relationships tell the story. It is a contemplative process, akin to the creation of the ancient Byzantine "icons". Each piece is a spiritual journey. My wife, Kathie, is an integral part of this process with her encouragement and prayers.
Each of my creations is a living ‘biblical touchstone’, a visual depiction, whether literal or figurative, intended to draw the viewer into the landscape of the Judeo-Christian scriptures. May you see, taste, and experience the love of God through these visual artistic expressions.
