Jon Sundermeier

Painting

Jon Sundermeier is a Nebraska artist who has been painting most of his adult life.  His primary medium is watercolor but when time allows he also works with oil paint. He finds inspiration all around—in rural Nebraska, while traveling in England, France, and Italy, in California wine country or the coastal highway.  An avid movie buff, He sometimes takes inspiration from classic movies and completed several paintings in “The Man Cave Series” aimed at fellow movie buffs.  Jon is an accomplished portrait artist known for detailed and startlingly accurate portrait work.  He will take on a commission if the subject is right. Some of Jon’s best days are spent painting plein air or in the studio.  He studied art and English at Creighton University, but his painting technique is primarily self taught. He finds influence and inspiration from Andrew Wyeth, John Singer Sargent and many of the impressionists, chiefly Van Gogh.  Painting is still a part time activity for him, who retired from law enforcement in 2017 and works full time in threat assessment for the Lincoln Public Schools.  He lives on an old farmstead near Greenwood and loves wide open rural spaces.  Several paintings have been completed within a mile of his house.  He is always watching the sky and the light, looking for interesting clouds and atmospheric conditions.
